Larga Baffin Ltd. is a home away from home for many people traveling from the Baffin region of Nunavut, to the south for medical services. We do our best to make everyone feel as comfortable and secure as possible in our facility.
Larga Baffin has been serving residents of Baffin region since April of 2000. Larga Baffin is an Inuit owned company started by Nunasi Corporation and Qikiqtaaluk Corporation.
Your visit with us will start with a Larga driver picking you up at the airport upon arrival. Once we have everyone we are expecting off the flight or in some cases, flights, our driver will take you on an approximately 20 minute drive to our home. Depending on the time of your arrival, you may get to our home around supper time where you will be welcomed by others who are already here and invited to enjoy a home cooked meal from our kitchen. You will also be informed of where you will be sleeping, by our front office staff. Chances are there will be someone here from your home community.
If you are to go directly to a hospital upon your arrival, please be sure to mention it to our driver and s/he will be sure to get you there. Our driver will also take you to each and every medical appointment you have while under our care. If you have an appointment that we may not be aware of, please be sure to let us know and we will check into it and get you to where it is you need to be. We strive to get everyone where they need to be in a timely manner.
We have touched the lives of almost every family in the Baffin region. It is our goal at Larga Baffin, to treat everyone fairly and give everyone a warm reception. Our staff strives to help in every way possible. Please approach us if you have a concern.
Larga Baffin has a total of 54 beds in our two buildings, situated next door to each other, with a large dining room, laundry facilities, and spacious common rooms. If we are over-capacity, then we ensure that our Nunavut patients are lodged at a hotel with all of our services made readily available.
We have up to four passenger vans on the road for our people at any given time.
Larga Baffin’s staff has an intimate and a deep-rooted respect for the Inuit coming down for medical treatment. Many of our staff are of Inuit origin too and/or have dealt with northern organizations and issues.
There are a few things that we do not provide here at Larga Baffin. Firstly, we do not provide translation services. We work very closely with OHSNI and they have medically trained translators available for all appointments and on-call for after hours.
We do not administer or provide any forms of medication, explain or describe medical procedures, nor do we provide any preparatory supplies. If you have questions about these things, ask Larga staff to contact OHSNI.
Larga Baffin Ltd. asks that everyone who needs to come under our care bring certain things to ensure they have everything required for their stay here. We ask that you bring all personal care products, such as shampoo, bath soap, diapers, shaving supplies, toothbrush, toothpaste, feminine supplies, indoor shoes or slippers (winter time especially). It is strongly advised that you be sure you have your Nunavut Health Card (everyone) and 1 piece of photo identification, or 2 government issued non-photo ID. If you have any allergies, especially to any particular foods, please be sure to let our staff know and we will do everything to ensure you are not put at risk.
