For all Emergency Situations that require an interpreter immediately Page the nurse-on-call at 613-788-1432.
For pre-booked out-patient appointments, OHSNI’s Support Care Coordinator will automatically assign an interpreter.
For in-patient consults, procedures or conferences and any other special requests, call Alison Hammond at 613-523-7822 x 111
We request 1 to 2 day’s notice of in-patient needs as the interpreter’s schedules are finalized one-working day in advance. If we receive a last minute request, all the interpreters may be already occupied. The Support Care Coordinator would send one as soon as possible.
OHSNI can only provide interpreters for citizens of Nunavut. Patients who live full-time in Ontario should access interpretation help from the language services at the hospitals.
The interpreter’s main role is to provide language services for patients, their families and their health care team. They will visit inpatients at the bedside but this is a secondary role.
