How Appointments Are Booked

  • OHSNI receives faxed requests for Nunavut patients to see a medical specialist or have a test done in Ottawa.  We recieve this paperwork from
    • the family doctors in Iqaluit.
    • the medical specialists who travel north to see patients
    • the medical specialists who see patients in Ottawa and require a follow up visit.
  • OHSNI’s Support Care Coordinator checks that all the forms that  the clinic needs are with the referral- ie: lab reports, MRI questionnaires, past medical records
    • Since many offices will not book appointments without all the needed paperwork, OHSNI will ask that the staff in the north to send the missing reports.
  • OHSNI’s Support Care Coordinator contacts either the specialist's office or hospital clinic by phone and faxes them the required paperwork.
  • Then OHSNI must wait to be contacted by the doctor’s office or clinic with the appointment- date, time, place and any special instructions
    • If we do not hear from the clinic in a timely fashion, the Support Care Coordinator follows up to find out if there are any problems or a wait list.
    • For some procedures and operations, there are long wait lists.  OHSNI can only wait along with you.
  • Once the appointment has been booked, OHSNI faxes the information to the Qikqitani General Hospital'sl referral office and the patient’s local Health Center.
  • OHSNI files the patient chart only after the northren staff have confirmed that they have received our paperwork.
  • Any changes in Ottawa appointments are faxed to the Qikqitani General Hospital's referral office and the patient’s local Health Center as soon as it is recieved
  • If you need to change the date of your appointment contact the Qikqitani General Hospital referral office or your Health Center as soon as possilbe. Ask them to inform OHSNI on your behave.  OHSNI will inform your specalist and the hospital.
