Interpreters
OHSNI employs five Inuktitut/ English interpreters to provide professional communication services for patients, their escorts and hospital personnel. An interpreter is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These professionally trained interpreters not only provide language assistant but also culturally sensitive support for patients coping with stressful medical situations.
Nursing Case Managers
OHSNI's three nurses are responsible for providing continuity of care by preforming comprehensive discharge planning, informing the family and staff of the patient’s progress, providing crisis management, and overseeing child safety issues. These nurses share on call duties with the Social Worker. A nurse or social worker is on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Social Worker
OHSNI's Social Worker is responsible for assisting patients and escorts with social or mental health concerns related to the care that the patient is receiving while in Ottawa. This professional supports and councils patients and their families on how to cope with the stress of being away from home. The Social Worker shares on-call duties with the nurses.
Administration Staff
A Support Care Coordinator is responsible for booking interpretive services, transmitting northern medical referrals to the correct Ottawa-based specialist and triaging any appointment concerns. The Coordinator works to ensure that urgent medical needs are dealt with quickly, while booking regular medical consultations and any supporting tests.
Medical Records Staff
OHSNI’s medical records clerk is responsible for transmitting the medical records of patients seen in Ottawa to their northern care givers. This clerk maintains OHSNI patient charts and ensures that confidential information is stored in a safe manner.
Director of Operations
This manager oversees the daily operation of the program ensuring that OHSNI continues to provide services based on individual patient's needs, under the direction of Nuanvut's Department of Health and Social Services of Nunavut senior managers.
